Great Buys

Enthusiast Note: One of our greatest joys is finding a great or at least enjoyable bottle of wine for $10 or less. When we do, you will be the first ... well the second to know. We also mention great buys at other price points up to $50. But we know that like us, most everyday wine consumers are looking in the under $20 category for the majority of their purchases.

Winemaker Note: If you have a great wine that JOTT.com should consider and mention on this page, contact us to send us a sampling of your wines. Or invite us to your establishment to taste your wines. In particular, we seek to support small, family-owned or little known wineries deserving of international recognition.

JOTT Rating system: On this page, the rating refers to the quality of the wine at its designated price point.

Don't even think about it!

Nothing to write home about but OK, if someone else pays.

An enjoyable ride.

Well worth the cost of admission!

Top shelf all the way. Simply the best!

White

2005 Benmarl Slate Hill White (Marlboro, NY)

1/2
Price: $13.99

Opulent tropical and citrus notes both in the nose and palate and sun-ripened pineapple, mandarin orange, kiwi and a touch of honey on the palate as well make this affordable and stylish white one of our favorite east coast wines.

2005 Yalumba "Y Series" Viognier (South Australia)

Price: $8.49

Golden yellow in appearance. Bright, fresh floral bouquet in the nose along with lucious pineapple and mango. Notes of citrus and tropical fruit, a slight hint of minerals and spice, with a long, luxurious finish and great mouth feel. And with a screw top! Great value wine.

2004 Prejean Riesling (Prejean, Finger Lakes, NY).

Price: $12.99

We purchased this wine at Stoutridge Vineyards. Bright notes of honeysuckle and citrus in the nose. With honey, citrus, pear and lychee. Fruit forward, nice finish. Delicious.

2000 Stoutridge Glen Vidal Blanc, Finger Lakes

Price: $10.99

We enjoyed this in September 2006 and now know that certain whites do improve with age. A truly elegant, well balanced, wine with strong notes of tropical fruit and bright acidity. Pineapple, kiwi, honeysuckle in the mouth with a long, luxurious finish and amazing mouth feel.

2003 Marqués de Riscal

Price:

2005 Turning Leaf Reserve Pinot Grigio

Price:

2005 Kremser Grüner Veltliner
1/2

Price: $7.99

(Austria) Citrus and tropical notes, with bright acidity. Fruit forward, dry to semi-dry so those who enjoy a hint of sweetness will really enjoy this. Medium to full bodied, with a slight mineral finish in the backround. This is a rising star in the world of white wines. If you want to try a new white that resembles a dry riesling, or just impress your friends with a little known varietal, pick up a bottle of "Gru Vee" and enjoy!

2004 Adler Fels Chardonnay

Price: $9.99

When we first rated this bottle earlier this year, we gave it an 85. A good, solid Chard. We enjoyed it before but enjoyed it even MORE this time. It appears to have morphed from a good standard Chard to something even more quaffable. So we're rating this an excellent 88 at cellartracker.com. Classic notes of vanilla, butter, bright but relatively tame acidity. Well balanced, especially after warming up in the glass for a bit. A bit of almond in the finish.

Golden color. Medium bodied with a great mouth feel. And the price is right. Strong recommendation for an enjoyable everyday Chardonnay, or even for a special occasion (like Wednesday!).

Rosé

Red

2002 French Hill Grand Reserve Barbera

$12.99

(California) Gold Medal winner. Deep ruby in color, with pronounced aromas of black cherry. Black cherry and rich, toasted vanilla on the palate. Well balanced, medium bodied, juicy wine with a supple finish. Intensely enjoyable. Buy three. One for now, one for later and one for much later if you have the discipline!

2005 Emile Chandesais Bourgogne Pinot Noir

$19.00

(Burgundy, France) A medium-bodied dry wine presenting rasberry and blackberry aromas. A low tannin fruit forward wine with a velvety soft structure that melts in your mouth. Pairs well with poultry and light cheeses. It is hard to find such a red burgundy at this price point. Purchased from 4 Seasons Wine Club at Club discount.

2004 Septima Tempranillo
1/2
$7.99

(Mendoza/Argentina). Made of 100% Tempranillo this delightful gem was aged in oak barrels for 7 months. Regal red in appearance, honeysuckle, red fruits and citrus notes. Some truffle and earth, with a distinct but pleasing taste of toast from the barrel. Soft, and velvety. Fruit forward, with sweet tannins and a lingering fruit finish. Amazing value! Must-buy!

2004 Bogle Petit Syrah

$10.99

(South Africa) "First produced in 1978 by the Bogle family, this 2004 Petite Sirah is considered Bogle’s “heritage” varietal. On the nose, luscious boysenberry teases you along with touches of black pepper and herbs. Trademark inky and jammy tones fill the mouth with ripe fruit and berries. The voluptuous finish lingers with toasty oak and lush fruit. The firm tannins make this a wine that can develop for years to come, but you won’t want to wait that long to enjoy it! Try this unique wine with rich meat dishes of lamb, pork or game and their hearty sauces." www.boglewinery.com

2003 Lagniappe Cuveé, Rideau Vineyard

PRICE: $125 (case quantities)

Only available in case quantities, at $125 this exceptional Rhone varietal blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, and Grenache, is truly a little "something extra," as the name Lagniappe (a Creole word) suggests.

2001 La Famiglia di Robert Mondavi Sangiovese

PRICE: $16.99

Dark fruit (black cherry, plum) and plenty of spice notes make this classic varietal shine. Needs a little decanting or time in the glass. Warm, intense, aromatic with great mouth feel.

Sparkling/Champagne

Dessert/Cordials

Clinton Vineyards Cassis

Price: $35.00
Gold Medal Winner

Okay, so they are not giving this stuff away but if you understand the intricate and complex process that goes into making this nectar then you won't balk at the price point. This is that "special" something to have at the end of a fine meal to complete a perfect evening. By the roaring fire, with someone you love. A classic style CASSIS made exclusively from black currants. Can be sipped as a dessert wine or used for a KIR or KIR ROYALE.
